Students! Step into "Granny’s Kitchen Workshop with Sadé Smith." You will hear more about Sadé’s background and the inspiration for her book, Granny’s Kitchen, before learning about the Shelly-Ann doll. You will enjoy exploring topics about Jamaican Culture, such as family, food, and language, while engaging children in their own experiences of Jamaica.
The workshop will conclude with a fun game involving Caribbean foods, fruits, and cooking utensils before a live reading of Granny’s Kitchen and a question and comment period.
Sadé Smith is a Canadian children’s book author of Granny’s Kitchen (Feiwel & Friends/Macmillan, 2022) which is nominated for the Blue Spruce Award for the 2023 Forest of Reading. Her books often involve food with colourful illustrations to capture the vibrancy and beauty of the Caribbean islands. She loves the beach and enjoys fruits and she is very passionate about literature. Sadé writes books of representation for young readers so children can see themselves in books.

Canadian Children’s Book Week connects Canadian authors and illustrators with children and teens across Canada. The week of events is organized by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre, a national, not-for-profit organization founded in 1976.

Register 1 attendee per participant/class. You will be emailed an invitation link to Zoom and instructions prior to the day of the event.
